One of the questions we see most often posted on Facebook groups and Reddit pages about visiting Berat, Albania is: ‘How long should we stay? Is one night enough?”
To be fair, a lot of responses now say two nights. In the beginning it was nearly always “one is enough.”
That shows us that Berat, Albania really is an emerging destination. However, and we’ve known this for a long time, you actually probably need at least three nights. Maybe even four.
Why? Well, depending on what you enjoy, there’s a heck of a lot to do. And it’s a real mix.
Berat, Albania: A UNESCO World Heritage Site Like No Other
It would be easy to wax lyrical about Berat being a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is. We could tell you about its nickname – the City of a Thousand Windows. That’s true too. We could spend a lot of time talking about the wonderful Onufri Iconography Museum, the castle, the historic Mangalem Quarter, or a meander along the Bulevardi Republika as the evening light catches those extraordinary Ottoman facades.
These are all true. They’re all lovely and there’s your Day One without even trying.
Your private guide will bring all of it to life – the history, the legends, the layers of Byzantine, Ottoman and Albanian culture that have accumulated here over centuries. It’s the kind of place that rewards a proper, unhurried exploration rather than a quick tick-box visit.
Getting Active in Berat, Albania
Most of our customers spend a day in Berat being active and there’s plenty of opportunity.
Bogova Waterfall makes for a wonderful excursion into the hills above the city. The trail winds through beautiful Albanian countryside before rewarding you with a stunning cascade. Fair warning: the water at the base is ALWAYS freezing. Always. We say this from experience. 🥶
Then there’s the Osumi Canyon – one of Albania’s most dramatic natural wonders. The Osumi River has carved an extraordinary gorge through limestone over millennia, and it’s genuinely breathtaking. In summer, river tubing through the canyon is an absolute highlight – floating through those towering walls of rock with the water rushing beneath you is an experience unlike anything else in Albania. There’s also white water rafting when water levels allow. Both take a number of hours and involve a little bit of hiking too – in the best possible way.
Food, Wine and the Real Berat, Albania
The other thing about Berat, and this is something that has developed significantly in recent years, is that it has quickly become one of the great food and wine destinations in Albania. This is where we really come into our own.
A lot is written about the Çobo and Nurellari wineries in the Berat region, and they are excellent. Many of our guests have the pleasure of visiting the slightly lesser known, for now at least, Alpeta and Pupa wineries. Both are outstanding. Alpeta in particular is set in beautiful countryside above Berat, with a farm-to-table experience alongside the tasting that is genuinely one of the most memorable afternoons you can have in Albania. The wines themselves – particularly the bold, structured Shesh i Zi – are a revelation for anyone who hasn’t yet discovered Albanian viticulture.
It’s not just about wine. The traditional food in Berat is exceptional. This is a city that takes genuine pride in what it puts on the table. Home-style cooking rooted in locally sourced ingredients, slow-cooked dishes full of flavour, and restaurants that offer a wonderfully authentic experience. Often it’s the local take on wider Albanian dishes, tavë kosi, fërgesë, freshly grilled meats, that surprises and delights most.

Three nights minimum. Four if you want to do it properly and without rushing.
