What’s the best Albania itinerary? It’s a question we hear all the time. The other version of it from Facebook Groups is ‘Here’s my Albania Itinerary – what do you think?’. That one is often done after ‘researching’ for hours on said Facebook groups. Trust us, people – asking thousands of people who you’ve never met for an opinion is going to result in a similar number of results – that’s why it takes so long!
We see so much nonsense coming through – about what roads to take, what the best order is, do buses go from A to B, what are the must sees? They are valid questions but people don’t know you to really be able to give an accurate answer.
Truth is, there isn’t one! Everyone is different – every itinerary is different. If they were all the same it would be boring. However, the real difference comes, not in the questions you ask but who you ask.
You could ask thousands of strangers on Facebook. I wouldn’t. Far better is to ask a professional operator with years of experience of the country. The whole country. From living there. Not just one part. Not from just one or two visits over the last couple of years.

A Few Starting Points, Not a Rulebook
So what does that pattern actually look like? Here are five shapes an Albania trip commonly takes, depending on what you’re after. Think of these as sketches, not fixed routes. The whole point is that yours should end up a little different.
The Classic First-Timer (7-10 days)
Two days in Tirana to get your bearings, then south through Berat for the Ottoman old town, on to Gjirokaster for the castle and stone streets, finishing on the coast around Sarandë and Ksamil. Covers history, mountains and beach in one loop. This is the backbone behind most of our Highlights of Albania tour.
Wine Lovers
Less ground covered, more time in one place. Central Albania’s vineyards around Berat and Tirana carry the trip, with long lunches and tastings built in rather than squeezed between drives. Our Albania Wine Tour runs on exactly this pace.
Hikers and the Active Crowd
Head north, not south. Theth and Valbona, the Peaks of the Balkans trail, guesthouses instead of hotels. Slower travel between stops, bigger days on foot. Covered in our Active Albania and Peaks of the Balkans tours.
Beach-First
Skip the north entirely and stay on the Riviera – Dhermi, Himarë, Ksamil. Fewer moving parts, more time doing nothing, which is the point. Best suited to our Albanian Beach Holidays.
Short City Break
Three or four days is enough for Tirana plus a day trip out to Kruja and/or Durres. A touch of coast, no mountains – just enough to say you’ve been, and often the gateway to a longer trip next time. See our Tirana City Break.
None of these are the “right” answer on their own. They’re what tends to happen once someone tells us what they actually want, rather than what tends to happen when a thread gets 40 replies from people who’ve never met them.
