Good question! We’re so glad you asked. Rest assured, you’re not the only one – ‘When is the best time to visit Albania?’ is often asked!
We would love to say “anytime” because we genuinely think Albania is the best place going. Whilst that is true, it probably doesn’t help you much.
It’s true because Albania is great all year round. It just depends on what you are going for.
Beach Holiday in Albania? Here’s Your Window.
Albania has a Mediterranean climate, so this one’s pretty straightforward.
Things start to get nice in April, but conditions can still be a bit erratic. May’s lovely, June is warmer still. July and August? They can be really hot – at the time of writing (back end of July), we’re looking at mid-to-upper thirties. It’s also very busy in August, particularly along the Riviera, where the Albanian summer holiday rush is very much a real thing.
September is genuinely beautiful – warm, golden, and far quieter. By the back end of the month you may be chancing your arm a little on guaranteed beach weather, but early-to-mid September is outstanding. October takes us back towards April territory – lovely for exploring, less reliable for swimming.
For the record: I have actually been swimming in the sea in Vlorë in March. The locals looked at me like I had six heads and were genuinely concerned for my chances of survival upon exiting the water. So whilst not impossible, we’d probably leave November through to March out of the beach holiday conversation.
The sweet spot for a beach holiday in Albania? Second half of May, June, and the first half of September. That’s your answer.
Albania Wine Tours. September and October Are Made for This
As we are constantly banging on about here at EA towers, Albania is way more than just beaches. In fact, beach holidays are probably the minority of trips we organise.
Wine tours are easy to answer. September and October are simply bang on – harvest time, perfect weather, and the kind of peaceful, unhurried atmosphere that makes a wine tour genuinely special. In the words of Pacha from the indisputably excellent Emperor’s New Groove, ‘… that’s when those hills sing.’ 🎶
The beauty of an Albania wine tour is that it works all year round, honestly. Avoid July and August if you can, it’s just that much busier, and the whole experience is better when you have a winery to yourselves.
Bottom line for wine tours? September and October are the sweet spot, but there genuinely isn’t a bad time.
Tirana City Break. All Twelve Months
Tirana is such a cool, vibrant, endlessly fascinating city that it works beautifully at any time of year. It gets a bit wetter in the winter months, but honestly it’s genuinely good across all twelve months.
It’s also very easy to combine Tirana with a beach break as a twin-centre trip, in which case let the beach dates guide you and Tirana will happily fit around them.
Hiking and Trekking in the Albanian Alps. Plan Carefully
This one needs a little more thought. The Albanian Alps are not feasible over the winter months – snow and access issues mean mid-October through to the end of April are effectively off the table for serious hiking.
The summer months work, but even at altitude it can get genuinely hot in July and August. The sweet spot here is June or September – ideal temperatures, stunning scenery, and the trails at their most rewarding.
Culture, History, Food and Everything Else?
All year round. Every single month.
We have guests who go to Albania in January, in March, in November and they come back absolutely delighted. The country’s history, food culture, UNESCO cities, ancient ruins and extraordinary landscapes don’t take a season off. And Albanian hospitality? That’s genuinely a twelve-month-a-year operation. They are always, always ready to welcome you.
